are hardy evergreen shrubs. They are easy to grow in an acid soil or patio pots and thrive in partial shade.

Japonica and x williamsii types provide the biggest range of flower colour and forms. They will grow successfully in sun or partial shade.

All are free-flowering and their waxy blooms in shades of pink, white and red are invaluable for providing colour from February through to April. The x williamsii hybrids are the most suitable for growing in the North.

The sasanqua varieties flower in autumn, producing lightly fragrant single or semi-double flowers. They have a more informal habit than the japonicas and x williamsii hybrids.
